Travertine, granite and slate are the main types of natural stone tiles available, and what follows is a brief description of each of those types…

Travertine: Coming in a variety of shades of brown, these tiles, which are a form of limestone, look particularly good. They can be used to good effect on both floors and walls and the texture of them can really change the look and feel of a room. The only downside to them is that, due to them being porous and containing lots of tiny holes, they can be affected by constantly coming into contact with water, such as in a bathroom or shower area.

Granite: This type of tile is perfect for floors and outdoor purposes. As granite is formed from molten rock, it is easy to see why it is so durable. Granite tiles really will last a lifetime. You do not have much choice with regards to coloring and styles, but there is a natural charm to the way they look.

Slate: These tiles are easy to cut and shape however you want. They are mostly gray in color, but there are some nice variations to choose from too. They are best used for walls and countertops. The reason being that the thickness of them, even within the same box, will probably vary slightly..

Some people think that they have to choose just one type of natural stone tile, but this is not true, as combining two, or even three, types can look great if done properly. The more styles you use though, the bigger the risk that you are taking, so always get a second opinion before trying anything ambitious.

Natural stone tiles are easy enough to work with so long as you have the right equipment. Obviously, you need to take a different approach than you would when using ceramic tiles though, so if you have only worked with ceramic tiles before, then you need to do some research before you start cutting and fitting natural stone tiles. If you want to be absolutely sure, then calling in a professional is recommended.
