Let your first layer of joint compound dry, before applying your next layer. You will simply continue spreading the drywall mud evenly, till your seams are flat and unnoticeable.

After you have applied at least three coats of joint compound and it has dried completely, it’s time to sand the area until it is smooth and ready to color.
