Photography PasttimePhotography has long been a favorite pastime in America. From capturing scenery to capturing those special moments in life, people are drawn to being able to capture their memories so that they can later review and reflect upon them and so that they can share them with family and friends. Until recently though traditional photography made it incredibly difficult to do any sort of customization or modification without special equipment. In addition it was impossible to tell if a picture turned out until it was developed which was often too late for a retake. Sharing the photos also used to be a problem as you’d either have to physically show it to someone or mail it to them. This made advanced photography the realm of experts.

Today companies such as Nikon and make digital cameras that make editing and sharing pictures incredibly easy. The popularity of sharing photos online is a testament to how wide spread digital cameras are. It seems that just about everyone is now sharing photo albums with family and friends as well as complete strangers via online sites. In addition to drastically simplifying the sharing of pictures digital cameras have also allowed instant review, which drastically increases the quality of the pictures that are kept. Now you don’t have to be an expert to get amazing photos.

Local PhotographerCertain types of business have a vital reliance on understanding the conditions on the ground in the territories they service. This is particularly important for leasing, financing, and insurance businesses that deal with property across the country. To have a presence in all their territories and in every neighborhood they service is virtually impossible with just an in-house work force. It is however critical that they have information on conditions on the ground for understanding risks to their business. Changes can occur that either increase risk or provide a new opportunity but with all the homes, properties, cars, trucks, boats, etc. out there it is very difficult to keep such inventories.

A solution to this is to employ a freelance base of photographers to go out into the local community and update their database with pictures of the local area. The very wide availability of digital cameras has made this trivially easy as most American households now have the capability to take and upload digital photos. This allows the interested companies to pay only for actual work done and easily allows them to have coast-to-coast coverage of most neighborhoods. Thanks to technology and equipment such as digital photography, they can reduce risk and attain a capability level that until very recently was all but impossible with out a prohibitively costly investment.

One of the reasons we love technology is that it puts incredible, creative power into the hands of ordinary people. Laptop computers today have hundreds of times the computing power that multi-million dollar mainframes had a few decades ago. Desktop publishing software and affordable color laser printers allows literally anyone to create and publish their own newsletters right from their kitchen table. Even products like Soda Club allows ordinary folk to produce their own carbonated beverages.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IIOne of the most amazing examples we’ve seen of new technology allowing anyone to reach their full creative potential is the capability that new digital cameras have of capturing beautiful videos. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR is probably the premier example, improving over the Nikon D90 simply because it can capture HD-quality video in addition to 21.1 megapixel still shots.

Canon USA has created a page showing off some the capabilities of the Canon 5D Mark II. The sample videos listed below were shot with various complementary Canon lenses in HD, and then the video files were edited to create the final product. The color and clarity of the videos is original; no further image adjustments or filtering was performed. For the cost of a quality espresso machine, the average citizen can have the equipment to produce professional-quality videos.

The sample videos below are beautiful to watch. What’s even more impressive is that they have been compressed 25% in resolution — the originals are 4X larger and would certainly look incredible on a 1080p HDTV.

Canon Sample Videos:
Reverie – Short video storytelling
Voyage – A day in the life of the working man along the Des Plaines River
A Three-Act Play – Capturing bridal shots using a combination of video and still shots
Shooter’s Insight – Behind the scenes and interviews with photographers that have discovered HD video with the Canon 5D Mark II
